By Trevor Kugler What do I mean by ultra light? Ultra light fishing simply means fishing with lighter gear, lighter gear than you may be accustomed to. Thats it, theres nothing crazy about it. Basically, ultra light fishing means matching your fishing gear to the type of fish that youre fishing for. Ive seen all to many anglers that use one rod and reel setup for all of there fishing expeditions, rather than having different set ups for different types of fish. This is madness, unless of course you only do one type of fishing, in which case having only one rod and reel setup is all good. For example, I use a four-foot rod and ultra light reel spooled with four-pound test for most of my trout fishing. I fish medium to small rivers and lakes and the biggest fish that I would catch in such waters is six to seven pounds, and that would be an outright monster. Many people see me fishing with my setup and think its too small, but its absolutely not. Think about it, four-pound test line is strong enough to hold four pounds of weight without breaking, how often do you catch fish this big when trout fishing? Besides, Ive personally landed a seven-pound fish on four-pound test. I dont say that to be braggadocios, I simply want you to realize that most anglers use line that is entirely too heavy for the fish theyre trying to catch. Using line thats too heavy will result if fewer bites as well. So as you can begin to see, ultra light fishing makes sense all the way around. It also makes sense to use ultra light equipment by adding more sport to your fishing. Honestly, how much fun is it to winch a fourteen-inch trout out of the water with medium action gear, spooled with eight-pound test line? To me, thats no fun, but on ultra light gear thats tailored to the type of fish Im attempting to catch; a fourteen-inch fish is a lot of fun. One of the key differences with GSM is that the phone itself is not directly linked to you. Rather, the removable "SIM" (Subscriber Information Module) chip is encoded with a unique serial number which is what now identifies you to the wireless provider. Having your info embedded into a removable SIM chip rather than into your cell phone is what makes this all so interesting. If you place your SIM chip into a compatible cell phone, you can use that phone as your own because the service provider will recognize the SIM chip inside of it as yours. Conversely, you can buy compatible SIM chips from the country you are about to visit and use them in your phone. This is what allows you to avoid the ugly international roaming charges mentioned above. Before you can do this, however, you will most likely need to "Unlock" your cell phone. Unlocking a cell phone is basically reversing this programming. The process is very easy and quick. There are many service providers online that specialize in mobile unlocking. Once the cell phone is unlocked, it is permanently unlocked. Now I wanted a SIM chip that would work in the country I was headed too, again, Sri Lanka. I was told that the best way was to find a cell phone store there in Colombo but this sounded difficult as my schedule would be very busy. Depending on the size and complexity, you have the option of hiring a contractor or buying a kit and doing it yourself.
As is the case with all types of gardens, adding a pond for your own water garden will require following plan. The plan includes the following segments. a) Choosing the right place b) Siting the pond c) Determining the Size of the pond d) Constructing the pond e) Stocking the pond f) Maintaining the pond Constructing a pond takes a fair amount of work. Choose a pond that fits in with the existing motif in the area where you want to put the pond. Is the area casual, formal, etc? Consider the amount of maintenance required and don't forget the safety factor. Any area of standing water can be dangerous and lead to an accident and possibly to something much more serious such as drowning. Place the pond in an area where it can be enjoyed by the family. The ideal place for a pond is at the end of the garden where it is secluded. Here, there won't be a lot of foot traffic and the pond is likely to attract more wildlife. Do you want your pond in the sun or shade? This is the next decision to be made. A thriving pond is a balance of plants and wildlife. Oxygen creates a healthy environment for everything that lives in the pond. Oxygenating plants provide the oxygen for a fresh and clean pond and oxygenating plants require sunlight. Don't place your pond close to trees and shrubs. Leaves will fall into the pond, rot and foul the water. Tree roots can grow into the pond and puncture the pond liner. The size of the pond depends on the size of the yard. The pond must be proportionate to the yard. The depth of the pond should be at least 2 feet deep if you intend to put fish in it. Shallow water is more likely to evaporate in hot weather and freeze in cold weather. Marginal plants grown along the edge of the pond will require shelves to stand on. You may want to consider building a fountain in the pond. Fountains add beauty to the pond and are very relaxing. To construct the pond, dig the hole and line it with a water proof liner. There are several ways to do this. A pond liner made of polythene or butyl rubber can be used. The pond can be lined with concrete or clay. And, a pre-formed plastic pond liner can be used. Incorporate the pumps, skimmers and waterfalls required to keep the water clean and aerated and flowing at the quality level required to support the plants and aquatic life in the pond. When stocking the pond, it is best to have a mixture of submerged plants, emergent plants and floating plants. Submerged plants live completely under water. These are the oxygenating plants. Marginal plants live around the edges of the pond in containers standing in the water. Deep water plants have their roots underneath the water up to a foot and a half, approximately 18 inches of water. Then there are the free floating plants which float on top of the water and dangling their roots in the water. These plants shade the water and help control the temperature of the water. They also act as breeding places for wildlife. Pond management is best done from the middle of fall into the first three weeks of winter. Pond management includes removing excess plants, taking out a small percentage of the wildlife (up to one third), topping off the water and maintaining a hole in the ice in the winter. When planning to build your pond you will need to look at several things. These things will determine the size, placing, building, stocking and management of your water garden. All of these tasks are relatively easy. When you perform these several tasks in a quality fashion you will be rewarded with a beautiful water garden which will bring you many hours of satisfaction and joy. Many projects seem a little daunting in the beginning. The construction of a pond and water garden may strike you the same way. Start! Ethanol is an alcohol being used for consumption. It has excellent extracting capabilities from organic compounds such as fruits and herbs, which is what we are after.
The color, flavor and aroma will come from the type of fruit used . To make things interesting and certainly more robust, combination of two or more fruits will produce some interesting liqueurs to say the least. If we incorporate some of your favorite cooking extracts to this equation the possibilities are endless. All of the liqueurs, whether natural or extract, have several main ingredients; the alcohol, sugar and some type of flavour. Cherry Liqueur: this is the all time favourite, so we will use it as the main example. Take 1 kg (approx. 2 lb.) of whole sour cherries, remove the stems, and wash them (fresh, pitted cherries are excellent as well). Organic cherries would be the best choice, however if none are available, make sure that you thoroughly wash the fruit.
The majority of orchards use pesticides during the growing season. Pesticides, being organic compounds, will end up in the liqueur unless you get rid of them. Place the fruit in a sealable container, 1 gal. jar will suffice, and pour 1 kg (approx. 2 lb.) of white granulated sugar over the cherries.
Pour Vodka, 40% by vol., so that fruit is approx. - 1 submerged.
The sugar will sink to the bottom and cherries rise to the top with spacing in between. This is normal. Seal the container and leave it for several days.
Shake the jar several times to blend all the ingredients. Repeat this every other day or whenever you think of it. If you do not shake it, do not worry! The results will be the same it will just take a bit longer. Once the sugar is dissolved and you are happy with the color the liqueur is finished.
Strain it through the fine mesh strainer (cheesecloth. will do) and pour it in elegant bottle. It is ready to drink. The cherries will have some kick to them and provide excellent garnish on desserts such as ice cream. They are also delicious to eat, as is. The sugar that you added will produce the sweetness, typical of the liqueurs. If a less or sweeter liqueur is desired adjust the quantity correspondingly. The fruit will give the colour and aroma to the liqueur. The alcohol and sugar will extract the juice from the cherries, which have enough volume to dilute the alcohol content of the liqueur to approx. 30% (it is approx. due to the variance of the juice content in the fruit). The amount of time that it will take will depend on the sugar content and the temperature. Do not worry about the spoilage or fermentation since the sugar, in high enough concentration, will act as a preservative plus the alcohol content is high enough so that the bacteria or yeast cannot survive. This method will work on any fresh fruit. Excellent results are obtained using the berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc.) peaches (sliced), apricots (sliced), pears, apples, bananas, coconut, oranges (peeled), nectarines, etc.
Some fruits, such as apples, should be cored and seeds taken out. Seeds of apples contain small amounts of cyanide, which you do not want in the liqueur. Cyanide is poisonous. Interesting aromas and flavours can be obtained by blending two or more fruits. You are the creator so any combination is perfect. Some herbs such as mint yield delicious liqueur.
Take lb. of fresh mint add 2 lb. of sugar, litre of water and place it in a 2 quart jar. Top it up with vodka and proceed as for fresh fruit. If more or less minty taste is desired, adjust the quantity of fresh mint correspondingly In your local wine supplier store, you can purchase liqueur extracts. To make liqueur you can use your favourite cooking extracts, such as vanilla, concentrated juice, food colouring can be used to enhance the colour, etc.
Extracts, as the word suggest, is the extraction of flavours, colour, and aroma from particular fruit, or the combination thereof, purified, and concentrated. By the time genuine hoodia becomes a health supplement, it looks like a fine brown or light green powder, baring no resemblance to the genuine hoodia plant. But labs can still test this powder using microscopic and other techniques to determine if the powder is genuine hoodia gordonii or not. While these tests are not required by the FDA, since there is no FDA approved hoodia products, responsible manufacturers do have these tests performed. Phytopharm has invested millions of dollars researching genuine hoodia gordonii and its potential as an appetite suppressant. No one is claiming that healthy diet and a reasonable exercise program are not important for weight loss. While genuine hoodia gordonii products may help to curb a persons appetite, it will not magically melt the fat off of a persons body. Any company that makes such a claim should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC investigates reports of deceptive claims made by health supplement and other companies.
