Baby Development Stages
by cherie aleong - Wednesday, 9 April 2008, 09:34 PM
Anyone in the world

By Anita Eracybab These days many parents have not had a lot of experience with babies until their first baby comes along. If you are one of these parents you will probably find you have many questions about this new person who has come into your life and who is so small and helpless. It can be overwhelming and scary when you realize your baby is so dependent on you for everything, especially if you feel you dont know a lot about babies. Understanding what babies are like may help to make it easier to care for your baby. Birth to 4 months At this time babies are adjusting to life in the world. Most of each day will be spent sleeping but with increasing periods of time awake. Babies are totally dependent on you for their basic needs. As babies grow and spend more time awake they become more alert to what is happening around them. At this stage, crying is a normal and natural way that babies communicate their needs. Between birth and 4 months your baby is learning to: Focus for longer periods
Observe surroundings and follow a person or object with their eyes
Enjoy close visual and verbal stimulation
Recognize and turn head to familiar voices
Coo and make sounds
Watch and clasp hands
Play with fingers and bring hands to mouth
Hit dangling objects with hands or feet
Hold head up when lying on tummy
Show pleasure by wriggling body and smiling
Respond to sound that are louder than normal 4 to 8 months Babies are now becoming their own person. They are very excited about the world. Everything they see is of interest and they are developing curiosity about their surroundings. At this time babies like to be in places they know with people they know. Between 4 months and 8 months your baby is learning to: Recognize name by turning when name is spoken
Roll over
Bring hands together to play and grasp
Bring objects to mouth to explore
Transfer objects from one hand to the other
Lift head and chest using forearms for support
Prop on one hand or elbow while reaching for a toy with the other
Pull feet to mouth
Sit without support
Show the need for attention and affection
Mix different sounds, squeal and laugh
Listen with interest and turn head to loud sounds
Be aware of being separated from mother or father
Cope with the introduction of pureed food, moving on to more lumpy textures.
8 to 12 months Babies are becoming more excited and intensely curious about the world as they become more independently mobile. They are now on the move and are getting into everything, but will keep an eye on the people around them. They like to have mother/carer close by. Between 8 months and 12 months your baby is learning to: Point, gesture and make sounds to indicate what they want and need
Show anger by stiffening body and screaming
Jabber and babble expressively
Uses voices to attract attention
Enjoy simple and repetitive games
Repeat actions and sounds that they enjoy making
Crawl
Pull up onto furniture and cruise around the furniture
Stand briefly by themselves
Pick up small objects with thumb and index finger
Intentionally drop objects to have them picked up
Show anxiety around unfamiliar people
Eat food with fingers
Watch an adult walking across the room
Look for objects hidden from view
Turn head to sounds that are at the side or below 9 months old Babies between 712 months are learning to crawl, climb, stand, cruise and eventually walk. They are learning sounds and are learning that they are separate people from their parents. Babies are beginning to relate differently to their main caregiver. Mobility Babies between 7-12 months are learning to crawl, climb, stand, cruise and eventually walk. It is during this time, if not before, that the house needs to be made safe for a little explorer. All precious and dangerous objects need to be removed. Babies at this stage are intensely curious
They are developing their fine motor skills and will reach for very small objects
They enjoy experiencing a variety of shapes, textures, colors and sounds
Everything of interest is banged, felt, tasted and thrown
They need room to move in a supervised, safe environment 12 to 18 months Children are now walking and pleased to be out with the big kids, but they still need constant care and attention. Seemingly independent, they venture out alone, but keep an eye on those around them. They can watch, listen and take part in the social life of the family, and be an active listener. Between 12 to 18 months your child is learning to: Use words e.g. mum, dad, ball, water, more
Shake and nod their head for yes and no
Use long strings of sounds that often sound like another language
Understand more and more words and can follow simple directions e.g. get your bottle, show me your nose
Move and dance to music
Walk alone with wobbly steps
Push and pull large toys
Walk upstairs holding a hand or rail
Climb
Be more assertive and independent
Enjoy banging and stacking blocks and putting thins into containers
Be very curious and into everything
Constantly look for new activities although attention span can be short
Stop and pick up object they have dropped
Turn head to sounds that are above or below Growing and learning in the family The first and most important learning in a child's life happens within the family. Children learn from the way people treat them and from what they see, hear and experience as soon as they are born. Children are natural learners. Between birth and five years, and especially to three years, children grow and learn at the fastest rate of their lifetime. It is easy to see the enormous opportunity parents, and those who care for children, have in these early years to help shape children's learning before they start school. Wedding Gown: Getting Your Dream Dress at a Price You Can Afford
by cherie aleong - Tuesday, 8 April 2008, 07:34 PM
Anyone in the world

By Eriani Doyel Are you shopping for a wedding gown? If you were not aware of the prices beforehand you may have gone into a little bit of sticker shock when you started pricing your wedding gown. If you are like most people you dont spend $500 or more on a dress every day-and spending that much on a dress that you will wear once seems a little extravagant. However, some people are prepared to spend $2,000 or more to get exactly the wedding gown that they want. Whatever your budget is for your wedding gown, you need to shop carefully to make sure that you get not only a good deal, but a dress that will be one of the highlights of your special day. One of the best places to find an inexpensive wedding dress is online or in a discount bridal shop. They often have sales and clearance events to make room for new inventory or clean out last years models. You may be able to get a wedding gown for as little as $100 at one of the special events that they hold once or twice a year but most dresses will cost at least $500. However, you should also consider the cost of having the wedding gown taken to a tailor or seamstress for alterations, because these are usually necessary when you buy this type of machine sewn mass-produced dress. If you are willing to pay a minimum of around $2,000, you can have your wedding gown custom made by a seamstress or tailor. They will have at least 2 or 3 fittings with you to make sure that your dress fits properly on the big day. You should make sure that you ask them for references if you are not familiar with their work and feel free to bring in pictures, a pattern, and fabric samples that you would like to consider. To those for whom money is no object, a designer dress can be had for $6,000 or more. These dresses are one-of-a-kind masterpieces that will fit you perfectly. No matter the budget, you can find a dress. Eriani Doyel writes articles for and about Weddings. For more information on choosing a wedding gown visit fleckwedding.com. Relationships: Five Little Things You Can Do to Cultivate a Peaceful and Happy Home Life
by cherie aleong - Tuesday, 8 April 2008, 03:00 PM
Anyone in the world

By D. Giolitto Today's typical couple is busier than ever. Whether you're working overtime, shlepping the kids around, traveling or fulfilling social obligations, life at home can be a chaotic scene. But is this any excuse to let good-old-fashioned manners and consideration go out the window? Of course not. A peaceful and loving home starts by showing respect and courtesy to your spouse and children. Here are five little reminders to keep you on good behavior! 1. Remember your manners. Kindness and consideration go a long way. Don't interrupt when another family member is speaking. Make please, thank you, may I, and excuse me part of your daily repetoire. Apologize if you've accidentally hurt someone's feelings. Give others the benefit of the doubt. 2. Eat meals together. Sure, life on the run has everyone grabbing a quick meal when they can, but quality time is the key ingredient to a happy family life. Even if it's just once a week, schedule a day when everyone can sit down together at the table and enjoy a home-cooked dinner and some good conversation. 3. Be a unified parental front. If Mom and Dad can't agree on what the rules are, let alone enforce them, you can be sure that your kids will have the upper hand and the two of you will be left feeling ineffective and resentful of each other. Lay down the law and present yourselves as a Unified Parental Front! 4. Listen to each other. Sure, Moms and Dads often know best, but that doesn't mean shutting your mind to what your children have to say. Listen to each other with open hearts and minds, and start your children on the path to positive communication and great relationships. 5. Never go to bed angry. Sure, disagreements happen from time to time, but there is no better indicator of a secure and loving home than agreeing to put differences aside when the lights go out each night. Explain to your children that even though you and your spouse don't always see eye to eye, it doesn't mean you don't love each other. Same goes for the kids! Now more than ever before, we must instill solid family values in our children. The best way to teach them to respect others is to show respect for each other in our own homes. A New Orleans Chiropractor's View On Changing Perceptions Of Chiropractic In The US
by cherie aleong - Sunday, 6 April 2008, 04:02 PM
Anyone in the world

By Gordon DuBois The art and science of the chiropractor has often been maligned by the western health establishment. The historical animosity is mostly due to the fact that western medicine tends to employ a philosophy of reductionism, which states that the best way to understand how the human body works, how pathologies originate, and how to treat them can best be accomplished by reducing the body to its component parts. The body is classified into organ systems, then into individual organs, which are then divided into their component tissues, and finally individual cells themselves. Traditional western medicine seeks to localize the cause of pathology and then treat the disorder at the narrowest level of scope possible. This reductionism is in direct contrast to the holistic approach taken by the chiropractor. The chiropractor, much like the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, realizes that the body can not be effectively reduced into component parts. The chiropractor views life as an emergent phenomenon that both encompasses and transcends its component parts. In recent years, many western science practitioners have begun to appreciate the holistic approach of the chiropractor and chiropractic treatments are starting to find their rightful place in the medical mainstream. The chasm between holistic health care and traditional western medicine is narrowing. Just as physicians are beginning to appreciate the benefits of holistic approaches to health, some chiropractors are also employing some of the techniques and tools of conventional western medicine in their practice. Traditional spine manipulation techniques are combined with modern radiological diagnostic equipment to determine the most effective treatment for the patient. Chiropractors are also trained to recognize the symptoms of serious conditions, such as cancer, and when they detect such a disorder they refer the patient to a health care provider that specializes in that condition. Clearly, chiropractic practice is increasingly being seen more as a complement to traditional health care rather than a direct competitor. The public has taken note of the changing relationship between the chiropractor and the physician. For this reason, many insurance policies now provide coverage for chiropractic treatments. Additionally, the United States Armed Forces now mandates that all service men and women must have access to a chiropractor while in active service. Many athletes also take advantage of chiropractic treatment, both professional and amateurs. The United States Olympic team keeps a number of chiropractors on staff and chiropractic care is now seen as an integral part of the modern athletic training regimen. The increased acceptance of chiropractic along with other holistic therapies is not accidental. Scientific studies have shown that holistic techniques are highly effective at treating certain kinds of disorders, including some disorders that can not be easily treated using standard medical techniques. Holistic medicine, once viewed as a fringe pseudoscience, is enjoying an increasingly positive reputation among the general public as well as professional health care providers. Since chiropractic care is now more widely available than in days past, and since many insurance policies now cover the services of a chiropractor, the health care consumer finds that he or she has more options than before and is therefore able to take a more active role in planning his or her own health care. 3 Reasons Why You Better Know Your Customers... Or Else
by cherie aleong - Saturday, 5 April 2008, 01:15 PM
Anyone in the world

By Michele Pariza Wacek Which statement sums up how you define your customers? 1) I have a very specific customer in mind -- very specific and very narrow. I only want to sell to this specific customer, I'm not interested in attracting anyone else. Or 2) If they have a pulse, they're a potential customer. Okay, in care you were wondering, number 1 is good and number 2 isn't. Yet I can't tell you how many business owners I run into who are closer to number 2 than number 1. I know, it's difficult to think you might be turning away potential business. But trust me, your life will be much easier once you've carefully defined your potential customer (also known as your target market). And to further convince you, here are 3 reasons. 1. You'll be able to find your target market more easily. If you know exactly who you're looking for, you'll have a much easier time tracking down where they're hanging out (i.e. publications they read, Web sites they visit, radio stations they listen to). Then you'll know exactly where you should be spending your advertising dollars and/or which editors you should be courting for potential PR stories. Best yet, you'll probably be spending less money/time and yielding far better results. 2. You'll be able to persuade your target market more easily. If you know exactly who you're talking to, and what their challenges and problems are, you'll be able to craft far more targeted marketing materials. You can use language and images they respond to (which will make them feel like you understand them) plus you'll be able provide a specific solution to their challenges. You can't do this if you're trying to please "everyone." "Everyone" is a tricky fellow. He's tough to pin down. After all, "everyone" buys a product for different reasons. Take cell phones, for instance. Senior citizens, teenagers and parents buy cell phones, but they buy the, for different reasons. Teenagers buy them so they can chat with their friends all the time. Parents buy them for their teens in order to keep track of them (the teens, not the cell phones). My 90-year-old grandfather bought one for emergency use only. Each one of those reasons is a different benefit. The ad that appeals to parents knowing where their teenagers are is certainly NOT going to work for teenagers, and neither of those ads will be terribly persuasive to my grandfather. So if you're trying to sell to "everyone" just imagine how complicated it's going to be to try and cover all those different reasons in a single marketing piece. Not really possible, is it? 3. You'll have an easier time with your business. If you're busy running around providing different products or services to different customers, chances are you're not as efficient as you could be. This is especially true for business owners who are service providers. If you're constantly learning new skills for each client who walks in the door, how efficient will you be? Wouldn't it be better to stick with what you're good at and just sell that? Creativity Exercise -- Discover your target market Here's an exercise you can try if you're still unsure of your target market or if you want to make sure you aren't missing any potential customers. Get a sheet of paper. Write down all the features of your product. Features are descriptions of your product. Take cell phones, for example. Features of cell phones are they're small and wireless. Now change those features to benefits. For a cell phone, you can carry it anywhere and use it anywhere (anywhere there's a signal, that is.) Now make a list of who needs those benefits. Think broadly here. Maybe parents or people in certain industries or people with certain jobs. Try to come up with at least 50 markets. Be silly. That's when you're most likely to hear your muse (or genius) speaking to you. Another technique is to ask your subconscious for help. Do a meditation where you ask your subconscious to show you someone from your target market. Ask questions and see what the answers are. Once you come up with your list, then its time to critique and judge. Try and narrow it to no more than five target markets. One or two are better yet. The more target markets, the harder it gets. You can always start with one, and once you've made yourself known in that market, you can move to a second and a third and so on. Michele Pariza Wacek is the author of "Got Ideas? Alstroemeria
by cherie aleong - Thursday, 3 April 2008, 11:31 PM
Anyone in the world

By Sarah Ali Alstroemerias are the native blossoms of South America which are admired for their beautiful and attractive umbels. Also being recognized as Inca Lily and Peruvian Lily, Alstroemeria has been named in honor of Claus alstroemer who introduced its seeds in South America in the 18th century. Alstroemerias are the long-lasting, glitzy burgundy, cream, orange, pink, purple, red, white or yellow colored cut flowers belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Being partially zygomorphic or bilaterally symmetrical, these flowers comprise of 3 sepals and 3 petals, all being alike in color. Certain species may also grow as spotted or striped flowers. Alstroemerias are trumpet-shaped flowers which bear a likeness to the diminutive lilies and occur in small clusters at the top of long stem. It has six stamens with an inferior ovary consisting of 3 carpels. The placentas in the ovary are attached to the axis and it bears fruits in the form of capsule. There are around 50 diversified species of Alstroemeria being cultivated around the world. However, they are largely found in forests of Brazil and mountainous regions of Peru and Chile. The blooming time for the perennials ranges from mid summer to late summer, however, they can be bought all year round. They have a long vase-life of about two weeks usually concluded with petal wilting and loss of rigidity. Alstroemerias are considered to be of good quality if they possess a symmetrical head forming a uniform cluster of flowers. Growing Alstroemeria may require a certain amount of care. They should be kept away from ethylene sources and carbon monoxide. Watering should be done regularly, however water containing excessive fluoride shall be avoided as Alstroemeria are believed to be fluoride-sensitive plants. Solution containing flower food serves to be the best medium for Alstroemeria to grow. Moreover, if these flowers are required to be transported, the transfer should be done delicately as they have slender stems prone to be broken easily. Alstroemeria plays a significant role in beautifying the garden corners and flower beds. Because of its color versatility, it appears appealing and attractive to the seers if placed in vases or containers. Even, a stamp being produced by Argentina bears the Alstroemeria illustration on it.
Alstroemeria flowers are no doubt, a symbol of perfect beauty. The Many Benefits Of Car Loan Refinancing
by cherie aleong - Tuesday, 1 April 2008, 06:19 PM
Anyone in the world

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Susan_Jan]Susan Jan When purchasing your new car, car dealers often try to talk you into getting a car finance loan with their in-house financing department. It is often easier to get a loan with dealers than with banks, but the downside is that these car finance loans often have higher interest rates. If you decide to use your dealer's car finance loan, make sure to negotiate for a lower interest rate. There should be some negotiation room as dealerships usually have several loan sources, each with its own interest rate level, such as the manufacturer's credit company or the local bank. You should also investigate other sources, such as your bank or credit union. You should seriously consider a car loan refinancing if you initially did not get 0% to 3% APR car loan from the dealer or bank. By refinancing your car loan, your current loan is paid off with the new loan coming from a different lender at a lower interest rate. You can save more money with lower monthly car loan payments thanks to the lower interest rates. You will also be able to accelerate your car loan payoff in a shorter period of time. It makes more sense to refinance your car loan earlier as the interest is usually paid in the earlier payments. The earlier you apply, the more money you can save. However, if you refinance after the fourth year your savings will not be as much. When shopping for different refinance car loan packages, make sure to evaluate them not just on the interest rates offered. Compare also other fees related to the loan, prepayment penalties, and the terms for the conversion options. You should also find out the lock-in period for the different loan packages. The lock-in period is the period in which the interest rate quoted to you is guaranteed, and ranges from 30, 45 to 60 days. The longer the lock-in period, the higher the price of the refinance car loan. With your savings from refinancing, you need to put it to good use. If you continue to make the same payment amount, you will be able to reduce the principle owed much quicker. If you lower the monthly payment to the new required amount, you won't be paying it off sooner, but at least you will be paying less. The Dangers Of Ephedra
by cherie aleong - Sunday, 30 March 2008, 04:28 PM
Anyone in the world

By Kadence Buchanan Ephedra is a compound that is often used in weight loss products. It is actually one of the world's oldest medicines, with documented usage in China occurring over 5,000 years ago. The drug has once again found popularity, this time in America's search for the perfect weight loss drug. It is known to cause many changes in the body; an increased metabolism, increased weight loss, relaxation of the air passages in the lungs, and increased energy are some of the effects reported. One of the major distributors of ephedra was a weight loss drug that is known as Fen-phen. This drug consists of a combination of ephedra and St. John's Wort, a natural anti-depressant agent. Over the past few years, plenty of other weight loss drugs on the market also included ephedra. Xenadrine RFA-1, Stacker 2, Stacker 3, and Ripped Fuel all contained ephedra. However, there is a dark side to ephedra. It has been recently banned for all usage by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States of America. In addition to its weight loss purposes, ephedra also causes some negative side-effects that can be quite severe. Ephedra is known to raise the heart rate, as well as the blood pressure of a person that ingests it. Anybody with high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease can be seriously in trouble if they take this supplement. A whopping eight hundred people have reported injury due to this weight loss drug, and a full fifty people have died from it. This includes Steve Bechler, an athlete who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles that took the drug during spring training and lost his life. An autopsy showed that indeed, ephedra had contributed to his death. Ten days after this shocking event, the FDA went into action, banning the use of ephedra in all weight loss supplements. The serious consequences reported by those who were damaged by the drug include hypertension, stroke, heart attacks, seizures, and full-on cardiac arrest. As you can see, this weight loss supplement's risks surely outweigh its benefits. If you or someone you know is taking this drug, its crucial to stop taking it. There are many ways to lose weight, and there are definitely other supplements that do not wreak havoc on your body like ephedra does. While the drug is illegal, it is still commonly sold, most often online but at the occasional party store. It's important to realize exactly what a detriment this drug can be to your health. Fitness should not come at the cost of poor health. Kadence Buchanan writes articles on many topics including

By Roman Zazulak For many people that are single, finding a quality person can be difficult. With long hours at work and lots of other responsibilities it can be hard for singles to go out each night or on the weekend in search of finding someone that they are compatible with. One great way to meet quality singles at your convenience is with online dating services. While online dating was once viewed as a geeky way to meet another person, the times have definitely changed. Today, millions of people each month contact one another with the help of online dating services to meet new friends and start new relationships. If you havent already made the leap, here are some reasons why you should try online dating services. One good reason to try online dating services to meet a quality person is because of your work schedule. 24 Hints for Gorgeous Gardens
by cherie aleong - Thursday, 27 March 2008, 10:02 PM
Anyone in the world

By Heather Diodati Want your beautiful lawn and garden to be the envy of all your neighbors? Here are a few tricks to use that will baby your garden and entice it to do its very best! 1. Make sure you pull up weeds before they go to seed.
2. Remove faded flower blooms to lengthen the plants growing season.
3. Turning and dampening your compost often will ensure that flies will not breed in the pile.
4. When preparing for winter, be sure to remove all vegetation, turn over the soil and add any organic materials such as compost. Add fertilizer according to package details and use a
pitchfork to mix in all these elements. Rake your garden to even it out and youll have less work
to do in the spring.
5. Free mulch idea: use shredded newspapers (which decompose) held down with grass
clippings.
6. Planting a small flower bed around the base of a tree will keep animals and lawn mowers
away from the trunk.
7. Before buying grass seed, ask a professional at your garden center which grass types are
best for your growing area and type of soil (clay, sand, mix) as well as amount of sun and shade.
8. Wire mesh at the bottom and sides of the holes will keep rodents away from your
bulbs.
9. When you remove your bulbs for storing, make sure your storage area is cool. Keep them in
vermiculite, shredded paper or sand to keep them from drying out and to provide protection and
air circulation.
10. Prune roses just above a 5-leaflet leaf to encourage flowering.
11. Pinch off spent flowers to continue flowering of annuals and perennials. If the plants
are too tall, cut them back a bit farther on the stem if they start to look neglected to produce
new growth.
12. Cleaning up the area around fruit trees and fruit bushes, picking up fallen fruit and
weeds, will help to ward off any diseases before they start.
13. Digging your fingernails into a bar of soft soap before working on the garden will keep
most of the dirt out from accumulating under your nails and will wash out later.
14. Pour beer into a shallow container and position a few of these in your garden. Slugs will
be attracted to the scent and will crawl in to leave your veggies alone!
15. To avoid blossom end rot and cracked tomatoes make sure you water very often and avoid
fluctuations in watering during the first critical 5 to 6 weeks after transplanting your new
tomato plants, and also during the development of the tomatoes.
16. Plant sunflowers and climbing beans. The vines will latch onto the thick sunflower stems.
This old Indian trick was taught to settlers!
17. Use zip lock baggies to enclose your empty seed packets. Attach them to wooden stakes to
identify your rows of veggies and flowers.
18. Pinch the new growth in between two branches of tomato plants to encourage the plant to
grow stronger and bushier instead of tall.
19. Use old pantyhose cut in strips to tie up your tomato plants to avoid cutting into
delicate stems over time.
20. Never water plants from overhead during full sun to avoid burning delicate plant leaves
and flowers. Water droplets resting on leaves and flower petals act as little magnifying
glasses.
21. If you have only a few newly planted tomato plants and you want to make sure theyre
watered regularly, punch small holes in the bottom of a plastic one-gallon container and sink the
container several inches into the earth near the stem of the tomato plant. Keep water in the
container to ensure that the plant gets enough water as it needs it.
22. Mix bulbs, annuals and perennials in your garden to have three seasons of beautiful color.
23. Vary the direction in which you mow your lawn. Grass mowed always in the same direction
is pressed down and stressed the same way. Mow diagonally, then in a circular pattern the next
time and in a square pattern after that.
24. Leave short clippings on your grass to supply nutrients as they decompose. However, if
too thick a layer of clippings is left, this will prevent air and sun from reaching your live
grass and will choke it. Want more of Heather Diodatis articles and how-tos? Visit http://www.whimsies-online.com/freecontent.htm.
